Vasectomy is provided by a number of our specialist surgeons, and can be performed in the rooms under local anaesthetic, or in hospital under general anaesthetic.

Types
Vasectomy Under Local Anaesthetic
A vasectomy is a simple, quick, and highly effective procedure for permanent male contraception. It is performed under local anaesthetic, allowing you to remain awake and comfortable throughout, and is commonly completed in under 30 minutes.
The Procedure
On the day of your vasectomy:
⦁ The skin is numbed with a local anaesthetic to ensure comfort
⦁ A small opening is made to access the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm)
⦁ Each vas deferens is divided and sealed
⦁ The skin is closed, usually without the need for stitches
Most patients describe minimal discomfort during the procedure and are able to go home shortly afterwards.
Recovery and Safety
Vasectomy is a very safe procedure with a low risk of complications. Mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort can occur and usually settles within a few days. Most men return to normal daily activities within 24–48 hours.
A vasectomy does not affect testosterone levels, sexual function, or ejaculation volume. The only change is that sperm are no longer present in the semen.
Important Contraception Information
It is essential to understand that a vasectomy is not immediately effective.
⦁ Sperm may remain in the semen for several weeks or months after the procedure
⦁ Alternative contraception must be used until sterility is confirmed
⦁ You will be asked to provide a semen sample for analysis after an appropriate interval
Confirmation of Success
You should not rely on vasectomy for contraception until a laboratory test confirms a negative motile sperm count (no moving sperm) in the ejaculate. Your surgeon will advise when and how to provide this sample and will confirm when it is safe to stop other forms of contraception.
Your surgeon will discuss the procedure, recovery, and follow-up in detail and ensure all your questions are answered before proceeding.
