What Is an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin. This can cause pain, swelling, redness, infection, and difficulty walking or wearing shoes. When conservative treatments are unsuccessful or infections recur, surgery may be recommended.

What Is a Wedge Resection?

A wedge resection is a minor surgical procedure that permanently removes the affected portion of the toenail and the underlying nail-producing tissue. This helps prevent the ingrown section from recurring while preserving the normal appearance and function of the toe.

Where Is the Procedure Performed?

A wedge resection can be performed in one of two settings, depending on your circumstances and preference:

⦁ In the rooms under local anaesthetic

⦁ The toe is fully numbed
⦁ You remain awake and comfortable
⦁ This is the most common approach

⦁ In hospital under general anaesthetic

⦁ You are fully asleep for the procedure
⦁ This may be recommended for children, anxious patients, or complex cases

Your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate option for you.

The Procedure

On the day of surgery:

⦁ The toe is cleaned and numbed (local anaesthetic) or you are given a general anaesthetic in hospital
⦁ The ingrown section of nail is carefully removed
⦁ The nail matrix (the part that causes regrowth) is treated or excised to prevent recurrence
⦁ The wound is dressed, and stitches may be placed if required

The procedure is usually completed within 30–45 minutes.

Recovery and Aftercare

⦁ Most patients can walk immediately after surgery, although rest is advised for the first 24–48 hours
⦁ Mild pain, swelling, and oozing are normal and usually settle within a few days
⦁ Keep the foot elevated where possible
⦁ Dressings should be kept clean and dry
⦁ Follow-up appointments will be arranged to monitor healing and remove stitches if needed

Most people return to normal activities within 1–2 weeks, depending on comfort and occupation.

Benefits of Wedge Resection

⦁ Effective, long-term treatment for ingrown toenails
⦁ Relief from pain and recurrent infection
⦁ Can be performed safely under local anaesthetic
⦁ Low recurrence rate when nail-producing tissue is adequately treated

Possible Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, risks are uncommon but may include:

⦁ Infection
⦁ Bleeding
⦁ Delayed healing
⦁ Nail shape change
⦁ Recurrence (rare)

Your surgeon will explain these risks and answer any questions prior to surgery.
